Pulse jet engine for UAV? Simulation? It is simple

pulsejet simulationWe recently looked and discovered an amazing thing – the pulsejet engine, which, as we were assured, was hopelessly outdated 80 years ago, turns out to be alive! And not just alive, but seriously considered as an engine for some types of UAVs. The only problem is – it is unclear how to count it. Because, despite hundreds of scientific papers, dozens of dissertations and even several smart books, which were probably created by thousands of very smart engineers and scientists, in 40 years not a single working computer program for modeling pulsejet engine has been created.

That is, if something was created somewhere, it was done once – for example, only for a specific scientist to write a smart article, dissertation or book. Therefore, such programs are not available to others. In addition, we have noticed one very bad tendency – some scientists, probably to demonstrate what smart and learned they are, and also to show how far (their) progress has reached, have taken to showing funny and beautiful pictures of 3-D modeling – instead of the modeling of engine itself. Apparently, they forgot that an engine is, first of all, thrust and fuel consumption at flight speed, and only after that the beautiful pictures of spatial oscillation of valve petals and wave propagation in airless space.

To fill the resulting vacuum (and stop the evil), we decided to spend time to turn this progress to our advantage. Based on past and current experience, we raised all our old models and programs (and some were written in Fortran for ancient soviet machines like BESM-6, which worked on punch cards!), transferred them to modern programming languages, added modern computer capabilities, improved some things, created a little bit and … received a ready-made program for modeling the working cycle of a pulsejet engine! Precisely modeling, not calculation – because the program calculates the pulsating cycle and changes of pressure, temperature, gas velocity during the cycle, in which thrust and fuel consumption are integral parameters. And precisely the engine, because the program calculates not only thrust and fuel consumption, but also the engine speed characteristics. And not only valved, but also valveless!

To implement this program, we have created a separate website, there is already placed a description of our model and program, and the modeling program already launched! Right on the website! And this is not just a program, but an opportunity to model, calculate and create your own pulsejet engine for any UAV – from the smallest RC model to the full-size engine of the famous German cruise missile V-1! And even test it at flight speed!
