We post here our original scientific materials on models and methods for determining the causes of malfunctions of various engines, in order to give specialists tools and assistance in their own work.

OUR MAIN SCIENTIFIC WORKS, BOOKS AND MONOGRAPHS ON RESEARCH CAUSES OF ENGINE FAILURES

The work shows that determining the cause of engine faults is a difficult task, not only due to the complexity of the internal combustion engine’s work processes, but also due to significant damage, deformation of parts, large number of debris in damage development process. In that time the cause-and-effect relationships between signs on parts and the workflows causing these symptoms are not obvious. As a result, in practice, there are often cases of erroneous determination of the cause of a fault, which can affect all stages of production and operation of the engine, causing not only significant economic losses and long periods of vehicle downtime, but also a repetition of the fault.
To solve the problem of correct and effective determination of the causes of faults, a general approach to research is presented by analyzing the technical condition of the main units and parts of an internal combustion engine as a complex system. Numerous fault causes, defects and damage to engines are considered in detail, their classification is carried out, an analysis of their signs is carried out, including not only numerous types of operational damage, but also manufacturing defects arising from design, manufacture and/or assembly, including defects in secondary (repair) production. The general principles of research and practical determination of the causes of engine faults have been developed, including with the help of a retrospective analysis of the vehicle history, which makes it possible to establish a connection between the technical state of the engine and events in its history and to identify the sources and moments of initial damage.
On the basis of numerous cases of faults from the practice of studying the technical condition of various types internal combustion engines, the main signs of various types of damage are analyzed in detail. Methods for modeling damage to parts in the most common faults, including hydrolock in cylinder due to liquid entering, breach of rotation of the distribution and crank mechanism, lubrication, cooling and other types of damage are considered. By dividing the revealed signs into the main ones, confirming and clarifying, as well as using the data obtained in the simulation of damage processes, by further synthesis and modelling, simple methods have been developed for determining the causes of the malfunction, including in case of severe damage to the vehicle internal combustion engine.

Our new monograph examines a number of previously unnoticed and insufficiently studied mechanisms for the development of faults that cause local operational damage in automobile internal combustion engines. The general concept of modeling the processes and mechanisms of the occurrence and development of engine malfunctions is presented. The role, capabilities, purpose and features of mathematical modeling of processes that lead to damage and failure of engines are determined. Based on the results of the research, it was noted that the developed models can be used in practice in determining the causes of malfunctions of engines of various types, and their use in expert studies can increase the accuracy and objectivity of expert opinions.

The book is intended for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers majoring in Automobile operation, but may also be useful to engineers, experts and scientists in other fields related to the process research, design and operation of internal combustion engines.

This new superbook is dedicated to identifying the causes of severe damage, complex malfunctions, and failures of vehicle internal combustion engines. It summarizes the authors’ experience in their many years of research on these issues through the application of mathematical and computer modeling, multivariate experiments, and scientific and technical expertise.
The book has been approved for publication by the Academic Council of Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University and recommended by the Academic Council of the Faculty of Automobile Engineering, as well as the Gredeskul Automobile Department, for students, graduate students, engineers, experts, specialists, and scientists in fields related to research into the operation and repair of vehicles, their components, mechanisms, and systems.
